M 1.11- Read TB p. 306-311, finish tabbed book (include drawings/diagrams & descriptions for each)

Absent Monday?  Today we learned about Volcanic Features and filled in p. 76 of SciNB.

T 1.12- Read TB p. 313-317, do SciNB p. 78, answer TB p. 317 # 2, 3 in "SumIt" p. 78 (FCS, RSQ)
Announcement: ch 7 test will be on Tuesday, 1/19.

Absent Tuesday? Today we learned about Volcanic Hazards, and watched part of "Krakatoa" from the History Channel series, How the Earth was Made.    The tabbed book was collected, and we looked at a map of the plate boundaries, overlayed the locations of volcanoes and earthquakes on the map to emphasize that most volcanoes and earthquakes happen along (or near) plate boundaries.  We also emphasized the North American plate, the Juan de Fuca plate, and the Pacific plate (and the Ring of Fire - see TB p. 295 and the volcanoes along the plate boundaries that are near the edges of the Pacific Ocean).  These three plates are MUST KNOWS for the next test; we also emphasized that Iceland was formed by volcanoes on the mid-ocean ridge. (It would be good to know about the Indo-Australian plate and Eurasian plate although they do not come up quite as often).

W 1.13- Do SciNB p. 77, 79, answer TB p. 317 # 5, 6 in "Sum It" p. 79 (FCS, RSQ)

Absent Wednesday?  Students were assigned the "Volcano Quick Facts" research project.  You can download a sample, grading rubric, and extra copies of the assignment at the bottom of this weeks' entry (look for the purple text).  We were in the LRC (computer lab) learning about bibliographies and starting some research.  Check out the links below from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) - we were looking at them in class for about 10 minutes depending upon student interests:

Computer Lab Assignment:  First, check out a few of the topics below.  Try using a few links to create a bibliography, then get the research assignment from Mrs. Fischer.
1.  General Information on volcano hazards from USGS  Talks about gas emissions, lahars, pyroclastic flows, landslides, lava flows, and much more!
2.  Effect of Ash on Airplanes,
USGS's factsheet
3.  USGS answers common questions related to volcanoes from movies (if you asked about water being acidic enough to harm people, there is an answer here)

BibMe.Org  ... you can use it to help you create your bibliography - be sure to use the MLA format.

R 1.14- Answer TB p. 325 # 1-15, p. 326-327 # 1-11, 13. (WOTQ or FCS, RSQ for all)

Absent Thursday?  We workd on a ch 7 review sheet, corrected some of the answers; most of the tabbed books were returned along with an orange paper which is to be permenantly kept in your binder/folder for science.  It is a Quick Reference Guide for making bibliographies.  It follows the MLA style, which the the format you are to use for your bibliography on the "Volcano Quick Facts".

F 1.15- Finish "Volcano Quick Facts" due Wed. 1/20 and
Study for ch. 7 test on Tuesday!

Absent Friday?  We (hopefully) will be using the internet on the laptops to research our volcanoes.  If that does not work out, we will do some more review for Tuesday's test.

(note: Monday, 1/18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there is no school)

Volcano Quick Facts research project ... you may click on underlined names of files to download

6.ch7VolcanoFactSheet2010.pdf (955.16 KB) --> This file contains a completed sample, another copy of the project showing the point value of sections (like a grading rubric would), a blank copy if you need to print it out, and volcano classification chart from the USGS.
6ch7VolcDocument.doc (640.5 KB) --> This file is an editable Word document if you'd like to type your project.
