Earth & Life Under The Microscope

Did you feel it?  I was at school in the classroom grading projects, S.S.-M. in 3*- Just a few hours before the quake, I was laughing with your Dad's EQ experience from 89 and and thought how unfortunate.  Unfortunately, I was caught in a similar situation with tonight's.  Didn't see any damage in the classroom or buildings as I was walking from the room to the parking lot.  I'm glad I moved some of the heavy books in the classroom though to lower shelves.  Let's hope for no aftershocks tonight and that it wasn't a fore shock!

Too bad this occurred one day too late for our project #3 with sixth graders!   Leave a comment describing what you felt, where you were, what you thought about, and if you're going to be doing any earthquake proofing, and/or adding anything to your EQ kits, etc. for 10 points extra credit. 

Remember for privacy reasons, in the "name field" type your initials, and period number, and do not include an email/web page.  :)

W 10.31- 6th grade- Bring in 3 fun size snickers/milky way/ mars bars from your H.W. candy (make sure it is something you would not be allergic to ... Charleston Chews should work too)
all students- Be safe tonight, look both ways before you cross any streets.  Walk with a group of people, have an adult with you.

R 11.1- everyone- Bring in workbooks for tomorrow - pages are being checked!
6th grade- Read ch. 2 sect 2 and do workbook pages.  Make sure you bring in all of your work, notes, etc. because we will also be doing a mini-notebook check!  (list will be provided in class, or it is posted at the bottom of this entry! You'll check to be sure items are complete and in notebook during class Friday.)
7th grade-Read ch 2 sect 3 and do workbook pages.

F 11.2- 6th grade- Fix notebook check #2 as needed, complete "Sticky Fault Lab Activity" if not finished in class  We'll do "Sticky Faults on Monday.
7th grade- Finish "Cellular Soap Opera" activity questions from class and Sleep in!
Everyone: change clocks back 1 hour on Saturday before you go to bed.

M 10.23- 6th grade- Project #3 distributed.  Due Oct. 30.  Students have a variety of choices to select from, must complete at least 40 points in value.  Available for download here: 6.Proj3.pdf (153.81 KB)   Here is another choice!  Go through the Astro Adventure for Geology (training and adventure), print your certificate or notes at the end of the adventure and submit with the Project #3 assignment; this is worth 10 points.
7th grade- Complete Onion Lab

T 10.24- 6th grade- Project #3 (due 7 days from now!)
7th grade- Study for tomorrow's Microscope Quiz - topics to expect on the quiz:  (1) parts of the microscope (be able to identify the parts on a diagram), (2) functions of the parts, (3) be able to describe how to use the microscope, (4) describe how to make a wet mount slide, (5) describe how to carry the microscope, (6) the secret of the microscope (think of what is done to the image of the pin, the letter e), (7)  magnification - how to determine the magnification of the image you are seeing.  This quiz is without notes.  Topics were told to the class today and have been covered over the last 5-7 classes.

W 10.25- 6th grade- Project #3
7th grade-Answer the three questions about the microscope...  Students already have the questions on a paper given out last week.  The basic ideas behind the questions (although they're not in this exact wording) are... (1) describe how to use a microscope, (2) describe proper care and cleaning of microscope, (3) describe how to make a wet mount slide.

R 10.26-6th grade-Project #3
7th grade-Create a quiz about the microscope and cells worth 40 points. The minimum number of questions: 5, maximum number of questions is 36.  You must answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper.  Your quiz may be typed or hand written and can include illustrations/pictures from the textbook (photocopied), online, and/or drawings.  If you include pictures/illustrations, your answer sheet must list the source of the picture (book page/web address. etc).  You MUST include the point value of each question.  If questions are worth more than two points, your answer sheet needs to explain or show how a student may earn partial credit on the question.

F 10.27-6th grade-Project #3 due Tuesday.

Here is Science Calendar #2, which was given out last week. SciCal2.pdf (125.96 KB)  Students are to include it in their next notebook check, and a parent/guardian signature is required. 

M 10/15- 6th grade: Read and workbook ch 1 sect 4
7th grade- Project #2 due Wed.
all- Science Calendar #2 went out today.  Have parents & guardians sign it now, before you forget.

T  10/16- 6th grade- p. 40-41 from textbook, #1-13. skip __, __, ___ (sorry, I cannot remember the three problems I told classes to skip)
7th grade- Finish Project #2 (due tomorrow)

W 10/17- 6th grade- study for tomorrow's quiz on ch. 1 sections 1, 2, and 3.
7th grade- Read and workbook ch. 1 sect 4 

R 10/18- Sleep in and read a good book.  Make sure you have an SSR book in your backpack for Monday (I have noticed that some of the 5th period students finished their books and need new reading material - perfect timing!  The book fair is next week.).

F 10/19- No School for Students Today

Post your recipe for an Edible Earth Model as a comment to this blog entry.  This is worth 10 points (to ensure privacy, only put your initials and period number where it asks for your name)

Bring in a photo of your recipe after it has been made into a model!  Label the 3 compositional layers of Earth (crust, mantle, core) on the picture.  This is worth 30 points.  

This is due by the end of the second grading period (approximately 5 weeks from this posting of this entry- think early November).

M 10.8- all classes - "What I got wrong and Why?"   Students got back their notebook grades and test #1 grades (6th graders received a partial copy of the test... I will give the other part of the test back tomorrow .. I did not realize that I had incorrectly entered things into the copy machine this morning).  By doing the "What I got wrong and Why?", students may earn up to 1/2 of the points on incorrect problems on their test #1.  [Example: a student earned 50 out of 75 points, that means they missed 25 points, they can earn back half of the 25, or 12.5 points towards their grade ... it will be entered as an extra credit assignment].  For "What I got wrong and Why" students must do the following 3 things for each incorrect test question ...

A. Recopy the incorrect question [full text]
B. Record the correct answer to the question [use notes to figure it out]
C. Explain why you got the question wrong/less than full credit.  [must be a complete sentence]

*incorrect questions were listed on the little slip of paper taped to the answer sheet in class.

T 10.9- 6th grade- Rest of the questions in What I got wrong and Why?" & Parent/Guardian signature on "Student Assignment Report"*
7th grade- Read ch. 1 section 3 in textbook and do ch. 1 section 3 in workbook (due Wed.) AND Parent/Guardian Signature on "Student Assignment Report"* Also, finish "What I got wrong and Why" which is due tomorrow.

*Parents & guardians, check those backpacks!  Student Assignment report is worth 10 points in second grading period, it is due with your signature by Thursday for all students (that way if a parent/guardian is not available on the first night, there is a second opportunity.)

W 10.10- Read ch. 1 sect. 3 in textbook and do workbook pages for ch. 1 sect. 3. (both grade levels).

R 10.11- 6th grade- Finish labeling and coloring the plate showing the 3 layers of the Earth (label thickness of layers and name of the layers, see Sponge for today if you do not remember the thickness of each layer).
7th grade- "The Microscope" workshee, do both sides (given in class today towards the end of the period).  Be sure to label the names of the parts on the illustration, and on the back side, for the true/flase, be sure to rewrite the flase statements so they are true.

F 10.12- If it is cold and rainy, make your self a warm beverage (my favorite choice is hot chocolate), if it is warmer and sunny, have ice cream or a cool beverage.  Either way, be sure to brush your teeth. 

M 10.1- Textbook Scavenger Hunt (will be corrected in class tomorrow)

T 10.2- Finish video notes paper...... BINDER/NOTEBOOK RE-DO/RE-SUBMIT for 6th graders are due tomorrow!

W 10.3- Read ch. 1 section 1 from textbook.  Do ch. 1 section 1 in workbook [workbooks went home today with students - every student received one]  The workbook pages will be checked on Friday... students need to bring the workbooks back to school at that time.

R 10.4- Read ch. 1 section 2 from textbook. Do ch. 1 section 2 in workbook.  Bring workbook with ch 1 sections 1 and 2 (or written as 1-1 and 1-2) completed for a check tomorrow.  Homework from Monday and Tuesday will also be checked on Friday.  BINDER/NOTEBOOK RE-DO/RE-SUBMIT for 7th graders are due tomorrow.  Students assigned to this second chance will not get another chance to fix the errors/ordering of their work.

F 10.5- Wash your parent/guardian's car over the weekend.
