Announcement: Chapter 4 test on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

M 10.26- Answer questions for lesson 2 on ch. 4 Foldable (distributed last week in class).

Absent today? Watched KQED Quest program: "Sea 3-D: Charting the Ocean Floor" and took notes in SciNB p. 35 on the three methods used to map the ocean floor.  Link to video so can watch/re-watch at home:

T 10.27- Answer TB p. 181 #7 in bottom of SciNB p. 40 AND
       Reflection/WIGWAY for chapter 3 test due Friday.

Absent Tuesday?  We started an in-class activity titled "Mapping the Ocean Floor" (used the foam models to measure the distances of the land below sea level, or depths, in many locations of the model) and I returned the test results for chapter 3 (along with the Reflection/WIGWAY form, if your student was absent, this document is in the school office with Mrs. Dalin (she's the person who takes care of attendance).

W 10.28- Read TB p. 183-193, do SciNB p. 42, add "Globabl Positioning system (GPS)"

Absent Wednesday?  We finished finding the depths on the  "Mapping the Ocean Floor" in-class activity,  We corrected the question from last night's homework, and took notes on p. 43 of the SciNB (either call your study buddy to get the information, OR use TB p. 185-190 to help you fill in the three sets of notes on "Earth's Plates", "Types of Lithosphere" and "What Controls Plate movement?" from the assigned reading in the textbook).

R 10.29- Answer questions for lesson 3 on ch. 4 Foldable.

Absent Thursday?  Keep up with the homework and work your Reflection/WIGWAY for chapter 3.  We played the "Rock Cycle Game" (cannot be made up on own because specific materials are required.)

F 10.30- Finish classwork, start studying ... chapter 4 test on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Absent Friday?  1. Do TB p. 201 all (WOTQ), and 2. TB p. 202-203 # 1-9, 12, 14, 15 (RSQ).  3. Reflection/WIGWAY turned in (absent student turn it in when your work is due, # of days abensent plus one) AND 4. Copy the underlined information for "Measuring Plate Movement" into the SciNB at the top of p. 44  - where it asks students to "Explain how satellites are used to measure the movement of plates."  (I found this informaion on p. 191 of the textbook.)

A reciever on Earth collects radio waves and pulses of light (laser beams) to calculate the exact latitude, longitude and elevation of the recievers.  The changes in measurements are compared to calculate the rate of plate movement.

M 10.19- Read TB p. 166-173, do SciNB p. 36, add "fossil" and "Glossopteris".

Absent today? We read aloud p. 20/21 through p. 30 in "Quake" by Joe Cottonwood, and discussed earthquakes, and related them into continental drift (which students are to read about tonight for homework).

T 10.20- Answer lesson 1 quesions on chapter 4 Foldable. (distributed during class)

Absent today? We cut out the continents and fit the continents together like a puzzle (1st piece of evidence for continental drift) and glue/taped them into SciNB p. 45.  You can do this at home too- do a Google Image search for "Continental Drift"- print out a picture of the continents and connect them together like a puzzle!  Also, distributed the chapter 4 Foldable, click to download: 6.ch4Foldable.pdf (38.63 KB)

W 10.21- Finish SciNB p. 37, 38, AND answer TB p. 173 # 1, 2,3 at bottom of p. 38 in SciNB.

Absent today? We read aloud through p. 38 in "Quake" and filled in the "Evidence of Continental Drift" table  on p. 38 of the SciNB.

R 10.22- Read TB p. 174-181, do SciNB p. 39 add "sonar", "magnetic field", and " orientation".

Absent today? We read alound in "Quake", turned in the extra credit assignment, reviewed the evidence that was used to justify the idea of continental drift while looking at the continents making up Pangea, and teacher demonstrated sea-floor spreading on the Pangea - creating the mid-Atlantic Ridge.  We filled in p. 40 and 41 of the SciNB.  All of the information came from the textbook reading which is for homework tonight.

F 10.23- Enjoy your weekend!

Absent today? We watched a video titled "Into the Deep" (an episode from the  PBS program from the Scientific American Frontiers - it is about exploring the mid-ocean ridge) and answered six questions.  You can watch the episode online, click link and watch all three parts of "Into the Deep"     See Mrs. Fischer for a copy of the six questions.   (Note: some classes had extra time and we were able to read a few pages from "Quake".)

Reminder: Chapter 3 test is on Thursday, Oct. 15. Last week I posted a link to Mrs. Z's review - use it to help you reviewing portions of chapter 3 (lessons 3 and 4).  Don't know what I'm talking about?  Look at last week's Study Tip.

M 10.12- Answer TB p. 157 # 1-17 (WOTQ - Write out the Questions with your answers, that means copy the diagram; do on binder paper) & finish classwork, study for test

Absent Monday?  Various materials were set up around the room as stations where students followed directions to demonstrate some of the forms of energy, and how the energy could change from one form to another (i.e. kinetic energy becomes thermal energy because of friction).  We also checked homework assignment answers from last week.

T 10.13- Answer TB p. 158-159 # 1-8, 10, 11, 14, 17, 20  WOTQ/RSQ. Study for Thursday's test.

Absent Tuesday?  We finished the remaining stations from yesterday, corrected TB p. 157 # 1-17 (part of yesterday's HW) and tried the Mini Lab from TB p. 146 - we found that the directions should have the thumb tacks placed closer to the candle's flame. 

W 10.14- Study for test & finish classwork.   Study hint: Click HERE to Link to yet another one of Mrs. Z's review game - this covers all of chapter 3 in the game, Who Want's to be a Millionaire!

Absent Wednesday?  We correct last night's homework, completed the Standards Assessment p. 160-161 (skip #9) which students self-corrected after they were given time to try the questions on their own.  Students can use this to see what they already know & what they could study tonight, and worked on the "Conduction, Convection, and Radiation Puzzle" (the directions state to cut and glue, but we ended up just writing in the information for some classes)

R 10.15- Homework & Classwork Check #4 due tomorrow.

Absent Friday? Collected Homework Check #4, started the in class read-aloud, "Quake" by Joe Cottonwood (it is a fictional account of a family's experiences during and after the 1989 earthquake; set in the Santa Cruz mountains).  Distributed an extra credit opportunity related to the 1989 earthquake.

M 10.05- Point plotting and Celsius' scale worksheet, and
Reminder - redone Project #1 and redone Homework Checks due 10/13 for up to 70% credit.

Absent Monday?  In class we added details onto the "Most Kids Hate Learning about GCSE..." in the MUST KNOW column, and wrote information into SciNB p. 27 and 30 (the table comparing the temperature scale from p. 30 will be very useful when doing Monday's homework)

T 10.06- Answer TB p. 143 # 2, 6 in SciNB p. 29, and TB p. 143 # 1, 7, 8 in SciNB p. 30.

Absent Tuesday? In class we filled in SciNB p. 29 and 30 - complete these pages using your textbook.  Call your study buddy if you need assistance; one of the diagrams needed additional boxes.

W 10.07- Read TB p. 145-151, do SciNB p. 31, add "insulator".

Absent Wednesday?  You were not the only one - Mrs. Fischer was also home ill.  The class corrected their homework and watched Bill Nye Science Guy on Waves with Mrs. B. 

R 10.08- Answer TB . 151 # 4, 8, 9 in SciNB p. 32 ad TB p. 151 # 3, 5, 7 in SciNB p. 33.

Absent Thursday or Friday?  I announced that there will be a Chapter 3 test on Thursday, Oct. 15.  We took notes on the "3 methods for transfer of thermal energy, a.k.a. moving heat" - be sure to take notes on Conduction, Convection and Radiation.  Include details for each method about the materials that are best for that type of transfer (i.e. conductors, gases, liquids, vacuumes), describe and illustrate how the heat and particles move for each method.  Afternoon classes took Benchmark 1 on Thursday (morning classes took it on Friday) and completed the notes described above on Friday.  These notes will be part of the Homework Check next week.

F 10.09- Reminder - redone Project #1 and redone Homework Checks due Tuesday, 10/13 for up to 70% credit.
