To check a student's grades & status of assignments, click on the word "schedule" on the left side of the screen after logging into Portal.  Find the class, click on the icon of the notebook paper/pencil.  This should give you a current grade (will be listed as "semester grade") & the list of assignments and the student's scores on the assignment.  If there is nothing entered in the "points earned" column, that is because the teacher has yet to enter a score.  If the assignment is marked as earning 0 points (or there is a red missing note on the same line as the assignment), then the assignment is either missing, or earned 0 points (depends on what method the teacher is using to mark an assignment as missing.  Some will record it as a zero of zero work is turned in.  I try my best to record missing work as missing but the newer version of the gradebook is sometimes uncooperative and I must instead use the 0).

Why should we AVOID using the "to-do list"? The to do list shows all assignments entered into the grade book, but do not yet have a recorded score. Using the to-do list will give you the impression that an assignment was not turned in, even when it is in the pile of work the teacher has to grade.    When we started using Portal (a few years back), the office sent home instructions about the to-do list being inaccurate for this very reason.
